Abstract
729,525. Rocket motors. MINISTER OF SUPPLY. April 12, 1954 [April 11, 1953], No. 9921/53. Class 9(2). A rocket motor containing a cordite or other solid propellant charge, in the form of a hollow cylinder 11 inhibited from burning on the outer and end faces, is provided with a resilient U- section sealing ring 12, through which the charge extends, to prevent the flow of hot gases along the outer surface of the charge. The casing may be in two parts 14, 15, the part 15 remote from the exit nozzle 16 being less resistant to heat than the part 14. The part 14 is shown integral with the nozzle and made of steel, while the part 15 is of light alloy. The fore-part of the casing is recessed to form a seating for the ring and is connected by screw-threads to the rear part 14. Projections 17, 18 on the inner end faces of the casing allow free passage of the gases. The ring 12 may be partly embedded in the charge and the recess in the casing may be omitted.
