Abstract
960,106. Jet-propelled aircraft. SOC. D'ETUDE DE LA PROPULSION PAR REACTION S.E.P.R. Oct. 6, 1960 [Oct. 9, 1959], No. 34263/60. Heading B7G. [Also in Divisions F1 and F2] An orientatably mounted jet - propulsion nozzle is surrounded by an annular chamber defined to the rear of a wall secured to the engine, and to the front by a wall secured to the nozzle, and fluid under pressure is supplied to the chamber. In the Figure, a rocket nozzle 4 comprises a metal sleeve 5 with a refractory throat portion 6 and a divergent portion 7 with an axis inclined to that of the throat. The sleeve has a flange 8, and the body of the sleeve and the flange are journalled in a collar 10 and a bearing 3. The nozzle is rotatable in the bearing by a gear 12 meshing with a pinion 13 driven by a servomotor 14, and to reduce or eliminate the friction between surfaces 18, 19, caused by the axial thrust on the nozzle, the annular chamber 15 is filled with fluid under pressure from a reservoir 16, which may be the combustion chamber of the engine. Three such nozzles may be mounted on the engine, and are individually controllable, so that their resultant thrust may be coincident with or inclined to the engine axis. In another embodiment, Fig. 3, not shown, the co-operating surfaces 3 and 8, and 10 and 5, are part spherical with a common centre, so that the nozzle is mounted on a universal joint. In this case, the nozzle axis is aligned with the throat axis, and the nozzle is orientatable by two radially-disposed jacks at right-angles.
