Abstract

1328623 Air-atomized fuel spray nozzles GENERAL MOTORS CORP 19 Aug 1971 [27 Nov 1970] 38939/71 Heading F4T A fuel spray nozzle of the air-atomized type intended for use in gas turbine engines comprises outer and inner shells 23 and 26 respectively which define an annular air passage 24 provided with a cascade of curved swirl vanes 40, the inner shell having two parts 35 and 36 defining an annular passage for oil fuel which is supplied by a pipe 16 and which is discharged at comparatively low pressure through a row of circumferentially arranged fuel ports 44 formed in the outer part 35 downstream of the swirl vanes 40 to be atomized by the swirling air flow and to form a spray cone. For starting purposes and for low fuel flow rates a pilot nozzle 47 is incorporated inside the inner shell with which it defines a further annular air passage 38 provided with further straight swirl vanes 51, and the nozzle is supplied with oil via an additional pipe 18. The nozzle is mounted in a flange 22 of a combustion liner of a gas turbine engine and the nozzle is spaced from the flange 22 by four axial ribs 59 to allow an air film flow over the outer surface of the nozzle to prevent carbon build-up on its sharp-edged downstream end 34. In an alternative embodiment the annular fuel space 42 is omitted and the fuel is instead supplied to an annular passage in the outer shell from which it is discharged radially inwardly through ports formed on the inside of the shell. In this embodiment the inner shell is much shorter and is located at the downstream end of the nozzle. In this embodiment the ribs 59 may be replaced by a sleeve and circumferentially spaced axial wires.
