A resistance film in the form of a band is bonded to a longitudinally curved core of insulating material and is of greater length than the core. In the embodiment described gold/platinum resinate is deposited on a cylindrical glass rod and the resinate is decomposed at a temperature of approximately 450-550‹ C. The resulting gold/platinum film is then worked into a helix, e.g. by etching or cutting, and the film fired at 600-700‹ C. While the glass is still malleable it is deformed, e.g. in the shape of an arc, or as shown, an annulus, for use in a variable resistor. The resistance value of the helical film 6 has remained substantially unchanged by the bending of the glass core.
