Abstract

729,071. Magnetic fluid couplings and brakes. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Nov. 20, 1952 [Nov. 29, 1951], No. 29376/52. Class 35. A magnetic fluid clutch or brake, shown as a clutch, comprises a magnetic driving cylinder 14 carrying a coil 30 and defining a cylindrical air gap 36 containing a mixture of iron powder and graphite powder, a .non-magnetic cup-shaped driven member 39 being keyed to a driven shaft 22 and having a cylindrical portion 38 provided with slots 49 which lie in the air gap so as to intersect the flux lines of the field. On energization of the coil 30 the iron powder &c apparently forms links or chains which extend through the slots 49 to couple the driving and driven members. The driven member is provided with baffles 60 co-operating with baffles 58 on the driving member to oppose movement of the magnetic powder out of the air gap and to return any powder to the air gap which does so move. The cylinder 14 is driven through a bevel gear 63 and the driven member 39 maybe, e.g., made of aluminium, the light weight of this material reducing its inertia. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 649,553, [Group XXXIV].
