Abstract

729,045. Automatic catches. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. May 1, 1953 [May 6, 1952], No. 11412/52. Class 44. A door catch, having a latch controlled by a spring so as to snap into a locking position in passing a detent, comprises a push button for moving the latch against the action of the spring, a guide block for the push button and an escutcheon plate, said push button having adjacent its exposed portion a shoulder engaging a corresponding surface on the said plate, the arrangement being such that the exposed portion of the push button normally presents a continuous plane surface with the said plate. The guide block 7, for the push button 8, and the escutcheon plate 15, are secured together on opposite sides of a door 12. The push button 8, slidable in a bore 9 in the block 7, has a stepped portion, of a depth equal to the thickness of the plate 15, and a shaft 10 slidable in a bridge 6 of the block 7. The shaft 10 engages one arm 2 of a bell crank lever pivoted on a rod 3, supported between two plates 5 and 4 (not shown) projecting from the bridge 6, and under the urge of the spring 11. The other arm 1 of the crank constitutes the latch, engagable with the detent 16 on a wall 17. A spring 11a urges the button 8 to its normal position wherein its outer surface is flush with the front surface of the plate 15. In some cases the spring 11a is omitted, the return of the button then being effected by the spring 11.
