In an engine starting mechanism comprising he combination of an elastic energy-storing component, such as the cylindrical rubber or ubber-like member b, Fig. 1, an arrangement of manually-operable gearing for imparting angular movements at different rates to the ends of the member b, and a pinion q for letachable engagement with an engine wheel r and operable by the member b, a clutch h is provided which, when engaged, enables simultaneous angular movements to be imparted to the ends of member b and when disengaged allows the energy to be released. The housing a contains the member b, the latter having a gear ; at one end and a smaller diameter gear d at the other end, the gears being bonded thereto and meshing with gears f, g, respectively, of different diameters which are mounted upon a shaft e ; the gear g which is connected to the shaft e by the clutch h that is operable by a hand lever j, is rotatable by another hand lever m through a worm k. A gear n, which is also secured to the shaft e, engages a small gear o on the output shaft p that extends through the member b. Rotation of the lever m both imparts a different angular movement to each end of the elastic component due to the different diameters of gears g, d, and f, c, to store energy therein, and causes engagement of the pinion q with the wheel r upon rotation of gears n and o to slowly rotate the engine until the clutch h is operated to release the energy in the member b. In a modification, all the gearing is arranged at one end of the elastic component. In a final modification, an output shaft p, Fig. 3, is arranged adjacent one end of a shaft u which interconnects the gear d and a plate s bonded to the remote end of the member b, the shaft u being housed in a fixed tubular bearing member v extending through the elastic component b. The elastic component may comprise a spring or springs.
