[Also in Group VII] A knitted body garment is provided with a pocket having a straight mouth or opening extending transversely to the wales of the main fabric of the garment, the pocket, or at least that portion thereof adjoining its mouth, being knitted continuously with the main fabric. The knitting of the main fabric of the garment may be interrupted, knitting continued on a group of pocket-forming needles, the number of needles being progressively reduced for a number of courses equal to the depth of the pocket and then progressively increased until all such needles are knitting, when normal knitting is resumed. Alternatively, the narrowing and widening may be omitted, the resulting open sides of the pocket being closed by walewise seaming. A shallower pocket may be formed before or after the pocket proper and folded to edge the latter. A third pouch may be formed to provide a flap. When forming a pocket by the method involving progressive narrowing and widening, a gusset may be provided between the two operations by restoring all pocket needles to action, knitting several courses and immediately reducing the needles in action to the previously diminished number. The pocket of, say, wool, may be lined by plating with, say, silk or nylon; or a separately produced lining may be provided. The integrally knitted pouch may be comparatively shallow, and slit to provide a gap in which the remainder of the pocket may be inserted and secured, or through which access may be had to the interior of the garment. In addition to the binding and flap, an auxiliary pocket may be combined with the main pocket. Specifications 109,091 and 112,368, [both in Class 74 (ii)], are referred to.
