Description

Patented Feb. 22, 1949 UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE N Drawing. Application April 24, 1947, Serial No. 743,723
1 Claim.
This invention relates to knitting, and has for its object the provision of a method whereby garments can be knitted with pockets forming an integral part of same.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a method enabling pockets to be knitted at the same time that the garment is being made and to be completely finished without any sewing, or cutting or joining of the knitting material.
My method of accomplishing the above is described by the following schedule of operations which is to be considered as typical, and therefore subject to detailed variations contingent upon changes in design, shape or size of the knitted articles.
My new method of knitting the pocket simultaneously with the garment is as follows:
Cast on thirty-two stitches.
Work one inch in stockinette stitch.
On next row knit six stitches. Place a marker after these six stitches.
On next twenty stitches work as follows:
Knit twice in each one of these 20 stitches by knitting in front and back of each stitch.
Place a marker after these 40 stitches, then knit '6 remaining stitches; turn work.
Next row purl to first marker on left needle, then slip marker to right hand needle.
* *Purl first stitch slip next stitch.*
Repeat between to next marker, last stitch being a slip stitch; then slip marker to right hand needle. Be sure to pull work tight.
Next purl last 6 stitches and then turn work.
*Knit first six stitches to marker, then slip marker to right hand needle.
Knit first stitch. Next throw yarn to front of work like for a purl stitch; then slip next stitch and throw yarn to back of work.**
Repeat between to second marker. Be sure last stitch is a slip stitch. Next throw yarn to back of work, then turn work.
***Purl first stitch, slip next stitch.***
Then repeat between to second marker on left hand needle. Be sure last stitch is a slip stitch. Then turn work.
Knit first stitch, throwing yarn to front of work as for a purl stitch, then slip next stitch and throw yarn to back of work.
Then repeat between to second marker. Be sure last stitch is a slip stitch. Next throw yarn to back of work, then slip marker to right hand needle. Be sure to pull work tight. Then knit 6 remaining stitches.
Purl first 6 stitches to marker. Slip marker to right hand needle. Be sure to pull work tight.
***Purl first stitch. Slip next stitch.***
Repeat between to second marker. Be sure the last stitch is a slip stitch. Then turn work.
*Knit next stitch then throw yarn to front of 2 work. Slip next stitch. Then throw yarn to back of work.**
Repeat between to marker then throw yarn back of work. Then turn work.
* *Purl first stitch. Slip next stitch.*
Repeat between to marker. Slip marker on right hand needle. Pull work tight. Purl last 6 stitches.*
Repeat between) This finishes the pattern; then repeat between until pocket is the length required.
There should be a few rows of some pattern at top of pocket on right side of work. In such case it would be better to separate stitches in pocket.
On the purl side put all the purled stitches on a double pointed needle and then slip stitches on another needle.
Then work the pattern desired on the right side of the pocket and purl stitches on double pointed needles in the same manner as worked before.
When pocket is completed, bind ofi stitches on right side of garment between markers and then continue garment with stitches on double pointed needles in back of the work.
I have changed the double knitting by purling the back of the pocket instead of knitting, and have provided a method of knitting this pocket at the same time that the garment is made.
I claim:
The method of knitting a sweater or the like including a pocket knitted simultaneously therewith, consisting of knitting several rows of a portion of the garment in one layer, then knitting a row to a point where the pocket is to be formed, when reaching said point double knitting to form the closed bottom of the pocket, knitting two separate layers to form a pocket which pocket is knitted at its side edges to the first mentioned layer, continuing the knitting of the two said layers until the pocket is fully formed and an opening for a pocket provided, and thus forming the fully formed pocket 'on the exterior of the garment which is closed at its bottom and knitted to the garment at its sides and is open at its top and continuing the knitting oi the rows constituting the first mentioned layer of the garment until the same is completed.
ELVIRA JOHNSON.
