KNITTED GARNEE'E,
Specification of Letters Pat n Batente Sept, 9,, 1913. i
Application filed. May 2, 1912. Serial No. 694,631.
accompanying drawings, is a specification,
like letters on the drawings representing like parts. I
The present invention relates to an improvement in the manufacture of knitted garments andhas to do more particularly with the class of garments comprising sweaters, sweater vests and knitted coats.
The object has been to produce a garment in which the amount of hand work is reduced to a minimum.
Heretofore the pockets in knitted gar-- ments have. usually been provided by cutting an opening in the fabric and splicing in by hand a previously knitted pocket. The
. present invention, however, contemplates the knitting of the body of such a garment and the pockets in a continuous operation so that at no time durin the forming-0f the garment is the continulty of the knitting interru ted, the improved product described in thls specification being illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, of which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a sweater embodying the improved construc- -tion of pockets: Fig. 2 is a detail section of the same along the line 22 of Fig. 1 and partly in perspective. Fig. 3is a front elewith a part of the inner side exposed. The' knittingprocess involved in producing such a sweater begins at thebottom h and is followed in the well known manner to a point indicated by the line gg which also marks and coincides with the outer edge e of the pocket slit. The continuity of the body portion of the garment is then interrupted while the operation of lmitting the pocket forming strip 12 continues until the strip becomes sufliciently long to form, when folded, the walls' of a pocket having selvage edges d and e. The knitting of the whole width of the garment is then resumed from the line gg where it was interrupted. The edge d and e of the strip b-may then be joined together when desired in, any suitable fashion to close the sides of the pocket.
The important advantage in knittinggarments according to the present inventlon is that the whole body of the garment is knitted in one continuous operation and on one machine. This machine is the ordinary straight bed knitting machine except that a special cam moving mechanism has been provided to adapt the cam box for use in connection with a novel arrangement of needles. i
Referring to. Fig.3 of the drawings, a portion of the needle plate 1 is fitted with needles 2 having longer butts than the others. The cams 3 and 4 shown in Fig. 5 act in the well known manner upon all of the needles, engaging with the butts thereof as the cam box traverses the needle plate.
ent, the cam plate 5 is elevated by means of a slidable rod 6, which engages slots 7 in plunger 8, attached to the said cam plate, thus causing the cams to engage only the long butt nee- I When however, it is desired to knit only the pocket portions of the game cams again engage all of the needles and cause the knitting of the garment to be resumed across its entire width. .Obviously the width of the pocket portion or portions may be determined by the number of high butt needles inserted in place of corresponding 10W butt needles and the pockets may be formed at any desired place in the fabric or at any number of different places. L
r I claim as my invention In a lmitted' body garment, an interior pocket comprising a looped strip knitted at each end continuously with the garment, the
side edges of said strip being joined to- 10 getheri In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses. i
