Abstract
727,955. Freewheel clutches. BARFORD (AGRICULTURAL), Ltd. July 29, 1953, No. 21058/53. Class 80 (2). A reversible freewheel unit, which drives in either direction and allows freewheeling in both directions, comprises an internally-toothed freewheel housing 3, a rotary driving shaft 5, and a toothed transmission member 13 rotated by the driving shaft, the toothed transmission member being so supported as to assume one of two driving positions according to the direction of rotation of the driving shaft and changing from one toothed engagement with the housing to another when the direction of rotation of the driving shaft is reversed, the driving connection between the driving shaft 5 and the transmission member 13 including resiliently yieldable means 23-25 to permit freewheeling of the housing in either position of the transmission member. A sleeve 4 formed with a lobe 11 is fast on the driving shaft 5, the lobe engaging in a recess in the transmission member 13 which has teeth 14, 15 engageable with teeth 16 on the housing 3. A brake drum 19, within which the sleeve 4 rotates freely, is engaged lightly by stationary shoes 20 urged inwards by a garter spring 20a and carries pins 18 between which a tail 17 on the transmission member engages. The resilient yieldable means consists of a plunger 23 in the transmission member 13 loaded by a spring 25 to engage one of two flats 24 on the sleeve 4, and hold the tooth 14 (or 15) in yielding engagement with the teeth 16. On reversal of rotation of the driving shaft, the brake shoes 20 become momentarily effective to hold the drum 19 stationary and the transmission member 13 then pivots about one of the pins 18. The device is described as applied to a walk-type tractor, the shaft 5 being a driving axle and the freewheel housing 3 being secured to a wheel hub; a freewheel according to the invention connects each of two road wheels to the axle, to allow differential movement therebetween.
