727,675. Welding by pressure. RORVERKEN I. GOTEBORG AKTIEBOLAG. June 25, 1952 [June 25, 1951], No. 15967/52. Class 83 (4). Each oast iron piece of a flash-welded article has a carbon content of 2.7-3.6 per cent with the content of one piece not varying from the content of the other piece by more than 0.5 per cent and with silicon and phosphorus contents not exceeding 1.9 and 0.5 per cent respectively, the phosphorus content of one piece not varying from the content of the other piece by more than 0.2 per cent. The pieces preferably have a structure with finely divided graphite or with more bound carbon than free graphite. The two cast iron pieces A are clamped in copper jaws E connected across the low voltage, e.g. 7-15 volts, secondary of a transformer T. If the melting temperature of one piece is higher than that of the other, the distance a for that piece may be reduced. A power of 0.6 KVA per mm.<SP>2</SP> of welding area is employed for tubular pieces and 0.05 KVA per mm.<SP>2</SP> for solid pieces for areas between 5000- 18000 mm.<SP>2</SP> An upset pressure of 3-9 kg. per mm.<SP>2</SP> of welding area is used and welding is quickly effected to heat only a narrow zone. After welding the pieces may be rapidly cooled to 400-500‹ C. by water cooling the jaws and then allowed to cool in room atmosphere. Cast iron pipes with a flange at one end may be welded to produce a pipe flanged at each end.
