690,759. Cooling air by direct contact with cold solids. UNION CARBIDE & CARBON CORPORATION. Nov. 6,1940 [Nov. 30,1949; Nov. 30, 1949], No. 27007/50. Class 64 (i) Air is cooled, preparatory to its low temperature rectification, by being passed through a previously cooled stationary bed of pellets of stone or metal or both, having diameters between three-sixteenths and five-eighths of an inch. The pellets may-be beach pebbles or aluminium, iron or other metal pellets. Aluminium pellets may be hollow. Alternate layers of stone pellets and of iron pellets, aluminium pellets, or both, may be used. The pellets may be coated with a non-oxidising lubricant, e.g. graphite, molybdenum disulphide, tricresyl phosphate, or liquid polymers of dimethylsilicone or chlorotrifluoroethylene.
