Abstract
A bearing element comprises a chromium-molybdenum steel, the working surface or surfaces having been carbon case-hardened. The bearing may contain 0.1-0.6 per cent carbon, 0.2-1.0 per cent manganese, 1.0-5.0 per cent chromium, 0.3-15 per cent molybdenum, up to 0.5 per cent vanadium, and the remainder iron. In an example the composition is 0.4 per cent carbon, 0.6 per cent manganese, 3.0 per cent chromium, 1.0 per cent molybdenum, 0.2 per cent vanadium. The bearing may be subjected to a subsequent nitrogen treatment.
