Abstract

727,558. Cleaning heat-exchangers. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd. Dec. 8, 1953 [Dec. 8, 1952], No. 34066/53. Class 99 (2). The gas-swept surfaces of a tubulous heat - exchanger are cleaned by subjecting those surfaces to a falling shower of shot which is collected and recirculated, and the return of the shot to the surfaces is effected through entrainment of the shot in a stream of elastic fluid in the form of steam. The apparatus for carrying out the cleaning of the surfaces may include means for discharging the shot above the surfaces and means for collecting the fallen shot, and conveyer means for returning the shot to the discharge means and comprising a downwardly and forwardly extending inlet passage 4 supplying shot from the collecting means to a duct 2, and a nozzle 1 through which steam from a supply pipe 3 discharges into the duct, the steam carrying the shot to the higher end of the duct. The passage 4 terminates within the narrower end of the nozzle 1 to form an annular steam flow area.
