Abstract
726,744. Cleaning tubes &c. AKTIEBOLAGET A. EKSTROMS MASKINAFFAR. June 17, 1953 [June 17, 1952; Aug. 28, 1952; Oct. 30, 1952], No. 16787/53. Class 99 (2). In apparatus for cleaning the gas-swept heating surfaces, e.g. tubes 2, of a heatexchanger wherein cleaning elements, e.g. steel shot, are projected to drop against the tubes, the shot is conveyed by gravity or a gas, or both, in one or more conduits and directed against at least one stationary deflector member positioned to receive the impact of the shot and cause the shot to be scattered in different directions. The shot may be recycled after cooling. As shown, the shot is ejected from a feed conduit 6 against a deflector member 4, capable of adjustment to give the necessary distribution of the shot over the tubes 2, one or more baffle plates 5 being provided to deflect shot which would otherwise enter a flue 3 and the gas conveying the shot being drawn off by suction through a widened portion of the conduit 6 into a branch pipe 8. In modifications, (a), Fig. 4 (not shown) the shot is fed from a container and down a conduit incorporating a shut-off device, the deflector member 4 being shaped as a triangle or a circular segment and curved to an arcuate shape or angularly bent, and (b), Fig. 5 (not shown), a tube for conveying the shot is surrounded by a sleeve extending through the wall of the heat-exchanger and the shot impinges on an inclined and adjustable plate secured by arms to the sleeve, the plate being flat or curved and provided with ridges and grooves. When the deflector members are exposed to high temperatures, and to reduce wear by the direct impact and abrasive action of the shot, a coolant, i.e. a gas or a liquid, may be supplied to the interior of the members ; alternatively, the heat of the members is radiated to water-cooled tubes adjacent the members, or jets may be provided to spray coolant against or past the members, or a combination of all these cooling devices may be used.
