Abstract
725,906. Shaft furnaces. DUISBURGER KUPFERHUTTE. Aug. 31, 1953 [Sept. 17 1952], No. 24063/53. Class 51 (2). A shaft furnace for wasting pyrites and other expanding and caking sulphide ores with the aid of oxygen-containing gases, comprises a shaft in which the cross-sectional area for the top threequarters of its length increases by 25 per cent- 50 per cent downwardly and for the bottom quarter of its length increases by 3 per cent-7 per cent, the reaction gases being introduced at the bottom of the shaft through a grate supporting the charge. The shaft may be cylindrical, rectangular or polygonal in shape, and the enlargement may be effected in steps, Figs. 1-3 (not shown). Discharging apparatus may comprise bars or rotary arms sweeping over the grate and pushing wasted ore either outwardly through an annular space formed between the grate and the shaft casing, or through a radial slot in the grate. Figs. 4, 6 (not shown). In the case of a rectangular furnace, the charge material may be discharged through parallel slots 21 formed in the grate 22 by means of bars 20 oscillated over the said grate by a crank 23. The interstices between the grate bars are 1 mm. when treating pyrites of 6-20 mms. grain size.
