A discharge device for a shaft kiln processing lime or cement comprises a known rotary, crushing grate 10 on a shaft 4 below which are vertically spaced, concentric, annular baffles 5 increasing in diameter downwardly, and feeding material on to an annular base-plate 7 from which it is swept by a plough 6 into a discharge shoot 8. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the grate is conical and the baffles 5 slope downwardly and outwardly.
