Abstract
576,462. Rocking-furnaces. FORD MOTOR CO., Ltd. Sept. 27, 1944, No. 18484. Convention date, Aug. 11, 1943. [Class 51 (ii)] A continuous furnace in which the charge material passes in succession through different treatment zones and applicable, e.g., for roasting or sintering ores, calcining, reduction of iron oxide to powdered iron &c. comprises an inclined cylindrical chamber 10 which is oscillated about its longitudinal axis on rollers 12 through an angle of less than 360 degrees and is divided into two or more substantially isolated compartments by baffles 20 secured to the furnace shell. The first compartment 22 is fitted with heating means, 26 connected by flexible conduits 27 to a supply of solid, liquid or gaseous fuel and is provided with a stack 28 for the discharge of waste gases to atmosphere or to a collector. The second compartment 23 has supply and discharge connections 29, 30 for a treatment gas, e.g. hydrogen for the reduction of iron oxide, while the final compartment 24 may constitute a further heat-treatment chamber or be utilized for cooling the treated material. The baffles 20 are shaped as shown in Fig. 3, the capacity of the furnace being varied by using baffles with different sized apertures 21. The charge material is fed and discharged through rotary pocketed drums 32, that at the discharge end delivering into a liquid seal and that at the inlet end being arranged at the base of a fan-shaped hopper 33 which oscillates beneath a feed bin 34. A pendulum counterweight 35 is secured to the furnace by a rod 36 the length of which is adjusted so that the pendulum has the same oscillation frequency as the furnace.
