A portable apparatus for calcining minerals comprises a chassis 1 with wheels 2 which supports a furnace casing 3, a preheating chamber 4, a crushing mill 30 and a storage container 5. The combustion chamber is formed by the space between two groups of rotatable tubes 6 which are horizontally mounted and each of which has a screw conveyer 9 mounted therein for conveyance of the mineral to a discharge chamber 16 in the same direction as the combustion gases from burners 7 of liquid, gaseous, or solid fuel burned on a grate 8, which gases 20 together with vapours 18 from the tubes 6 are collected in tubing 19 for passage into the preheating chamber 4 for heating tubes 21 therein and exhaustion to atmosphere through a suction fan 22. The mineral is fed from a hopper 25 into a loading chamber 27 from which it passes through the tubes 21, each having a screw conveyer 24 into a loading chamber 15 of the furnace which is formed by spaced plates 11, 12 through which the tubes 6 and screw-shafts 9 of the conveyers respectively pass. After passage through the tubes 6 the calcined mineral falls into the mill 30 and then is conveyed to a receiving chamber 32 of the storage container 5 from where a screw conveyer 33 advances it along a tube 37 to fill in succession small tubes 34 provided along the length of the tube, each having an outlet tube 39 with a screw conveyer 40 for discharge.
