Abstract

725,168. Continuous casting; moulds. BOHLER & CO. AKT.-GES., GEB. Feb. 23, 1953 [Feb. 22, 1952], No. 4954/53. Class 83 (1). A method of cooling moulds for continuous casting is characterized in that baffles are provided projecting into the path of the flowing cooling agent, in a direction substantially at right angles to the direction of its flow in order to remove from the coolant the whole, or substantially the whole, of its tangential flow component while passing along the mould jacket. Cooling fluid is led in to a circular chamber surrounding the lower end of the mould 1 through an inlet orifice. A number of circular baffles 4 are arranged within the chamber at right angles to the direction of flow. The coolant is finally passed axially over the outside of the mould in an upward direction. Where two continuous casting moulds are adjacently arranged the cooling fluid from the first may be led downwardly again outside the cooling jacket and passed through an orifice in the lower end of the second mould which is provided with a baffle arrangement similar to that of the first mould.
