Abstract
702,719. Continuous casting-machines. ROSSI, I. Jan. 28, 1952 [March 2, 1951], No. 2254/52. Class 83 (1) A mould for continuous casting comprises an upper section having a mould passage therethrough and a lower section comprising a number of aprons extending downwardly from the upper section and forming an extension of the passage therein, the aprons being tapered downwardly to provide apron areas of decreasing width in the direction of movement of the metal. A watercooled upper mould section 1 with a passage 3 into which molten metal is poured by a pipe 4 has below it a tubular member cut as shown in Fig. 1 to form downwardly tapered aprons 5 leaving between them diverging openings 6 through which the metal is directly cooled by jets from nozzles 10. The lower part of a mould for casting bars of rectangular section comprises a single tapered apron 25, Fig. 3, at each of the long sides and a relatively short apron 25<SP>1</SP> at each short side, the aprons being rigidly secured together by frames 27 and secured to the underside of the upper part 21 of the mould by brackets 28. In a modified form of lower mould part of rectangular shape, each long side has two tapered aprons 35 having a diverging central space 36. If desired the aprons may extend around the corners of the casting as shown at 38 in Fig. 7. In'a modification the aprons may themselves be perforated to increase cooling.
