Abstract

A method of casting high carbon ferromanganese alloys comprises, (1) providing molten ferromanganese at above 1100 C., (2) casting the molten ferromanganese to form slabs, (3) cooling the slabs from 900 to 400 C. at a rate shown within the hatched part of the graph in Fig. 3 in dependence upon the thickness of the cast slabs and (4) subjecting the slabs to a shattering impact after they have cooled to below 200 C. In Fig. 2, molten ferromanganese is poured from a ladle 1 via a tundish 2 into a series of moulds 3 on an endless conveyer 5. After solidification, cast ferromanganese slabs 6 fall on to a cooling conveyer 7, on which they travel at an appropriate speed towards a tumbler 13. For large slabs, air-cooling from fans 9 is used, but for small slabs water-spray cooling from nozzles 11 may also be employed. When watercooling, care must be taken to ensure that all the water evaporates to avoid fine cracking of the slabs. At the end of conveyer 7 the slabs 6 are fragmented in the tumbler 13 and sieved by a screen 17.
