Abstract

667,577. Continuous casting-machines. CHADWICK, R., HOBBS, J. F., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Nov. 24, 1950 [Nov. 24, 1949], No. 30145/49. Class 83 (i). In the continuous casting of billets of substantially circular cross - section, in which the emerging billet is directly cooled by a water spray, the spray is interrupted at points around the periphery. This is stated to prevent central cracking of the billet by forming points of wealmess which facilitate release of stress by allowing slight distortion of the cross-section. In one form, water from a ring of jets 3 around the lower end of the mould 2 is prevented by a shield 4 from reaching the emerging billet 1 over an area indicated by the shading in Fig. 1. Alternatively, if the spray cools the billet only and not the mould as well, an incomplete ring of jets could be used. Each uncooled area is from three to four inches wide. If the mould coolant is used for the direct cooling of the casting by allowing it to flow out of the base of the mould the outlet is blocked at those positions where the cooling is to be interrupted.
