Abstract
660,168. Continuous casting - machines. MOND NICKEL CO., Ltd. May 19, 1949 [June 4, 1948], No. 13446/49. Class 83 (i). An ingot emerging from a continuous pasting-machine is cooled by bandshaped jets of water directed downwards and inwards towards the longi. tudinal centre line of the ingot under a pressure high enough to break any film of steam which may form on the ingot. As the ingot 28 emerges from the bottom 26 of the casting-machine it passes into a chamber 22 in which a reducing atmosphere is maintained and through a sealing ring 27 into a cooling chamber comprising a conical member 2 with elongated slots 12 directed inwardly and downwardly at an angle of about 35 degrees to the centre line of the ingot. Each slot lies at the base of an external groove 10 and communicates with a continuous circular internal groove 14. Water is supplied to the exterior of the member 2 through an inlet 7 and openings 8. After leaving the cooling chamber the ingot passes between guide rollers 21 and a water-tight gasket 20. The cooling water escapes through outlets 18.
