Abstract
1,271,804. Continuous casting. INSTITUT DE RECHERCHES DE LA SIDERURGIE FRANCAISE. 19 Nov., 1969 [26 Nov., 1968], No. 56542/69. Heading B3F. In a continuous casting machine, in which the mould comprises at least two movable steel bands 1 (forming opposing walls of a casting) supported by rollers 5, 6, the bands are cooled by a fluid directly contacting the band 1 in a chamber 14 formed by a plate 15, 15a and side seals (40) of polytetrafluoroethylene rubber. A curved fluid inlet nozzle 16, and a similar outlet nozzle 16 ensure a downward water flow which is non-turbulent. The rollers are grooved to lessen friction between themselves and the bands. The upper rollers 5 are water-cooled. In a preferred embodiment four bands form a tapered square sectioned mould cavity 4 the size of which can be adjusted (see Fig. 1). When casting steel the coolant pressure is maintained high enough to prevent the ferrostatic pressure of the steel distorting the casting produced at the lower part of the mould.
