Abstract

1,112,017. Continuous casting. CONCAST A.G. 4 Jan., 1966 [21 Jan., 1965], No. 387/66. Heading B3F. In a method of cooling hot metal in at least a partly solidified state, such as a continuous casting, by the use of cooling elements 4, 4<SP>1</SP>, 5, 5<SP>1</SP> and 6, 6<SP>1</SP> which co-operate with the surface of the metal 2 that is to be cooled, liquid coolant such as water is supplied under controlled pressure through apertures 11 and passages (31), (34), Fig. 5 (not shown), in the elements to a gap between the metal surface to be cooled and the cooling face (36) of the element and a turbulence created in the gap between the element and the surface which effects penetration of the film of vaporized coolant which forms on the surface of the metal to be cooled and extracts heat from the vapour film to effect improved cooling of the casting. To produce different turbulence effects the gap between the respective cooling element and the metal surface may be varied and the size, shape, and material of the cooling elements may be varied to produce different cooling rates. To further vary the turbulence the surface of the element faces may be roughened. The cooling elements may be used in both vertical and curved continuous casting apparatus and at least one set of cooling elements may be attached to the mould and reciprocate therewith, in the case of apparatus in which the mould is reciprocated. The cooling means described is in addition to the known cooling sprays 8 and 9 normally provided in continuous casting machines. In the case of castings with small cross-section each cooling element may completely embrace the casting as in Fig. 4 (not shown).
