Abstract

1,185,255. Continuous casting machines. CONCAST A.G. 20 March, 1968 [22 March, 1967], No. 13600/68. Heading B3F. In a continuous casting plant, to lessen the risk of irruption of melt through the thin solid skin 19 of a casting 11 emerging from a squaresectioned oscillatable mould 2, a casting carrier 7 provided with supporting elements 8 is placed between the mould and the following casting guideway 12. The carrier 7 is freely and omnidirectionally movable in a horizontal plane on recirculating balls 9 on a ring 10 and is thereby able to adapt to thermal distortions of the mould outlet. The supporting elements 8 may be rolls engaging the sides or corners of the casting, cooling plates or a combination of rolls and cooling plates. - In Fig. 7 an oscillatable curved mould 62, having casting surfaces 86, 87, is provided with a casting carrier 66 that oscillates with the mould. However, the lateral position of the carrier with respect to the mould is controlled by a piston 68 in a cylinder 69. The casting surfaces 86, 87 are each provided with a separate cooling chamber 89, 91. The heat abstracted by each cooling chamber is sensed and the piston and cylinder automatically shifts the casting 94 laterally thereby varying the location of the points 74, 75 (where the casting skin leaves the cooling surfaces 86, 87) in dependence on the heat abstracted from the casting by each cooling chamber. In Fig. 8, the carrier 193 does not oscillate with the mould 198 but is rotationally controlled by a piston and cylinder 201, (202), 207, (208). The carrier is mounted on balls 195 in a race 196 and is freely movable transversely to the casting axis in a direction defined by a line of balls 197 (on which the race 196 is mounted) in a plate 199. The mould 198 is provided with a cooling jacket 198 with several separate cooling chambers (211 to 218). The heat abstracted from the casting by these chambers is measured and the rotation of the carrier is automatically varied by the piston and cylinder in dependence on the heat flow to each cooling chamber.
