H., Fairlawn, Wylam-on-Tyne, (Representatives of PARSONS, SIR C. A.), CARNEGIE, A. Q. and DUNCAN, H. M., Heaton Works, Newcastle-on-Tyne. Jan. 8, 1931, No. 678. [Class 83 (i).] Casting-machines ; moulds ; castings.-In casting ingots and cooling them from the bottom upwards, a stalk is cast integral with the ingot without material interference with such cooling. The mould a, which has a bottom chill hand heating burners passing through holes e as described in Specification 278,032, [Class 83 (i), Casting &c. metals], is provided with a well k is which is placed a mass of metal unless the ingot is small. The mass may take the form of a number of vertical rods fixed in a base or a hollow body m with perforations r and vertical or horizontal ribs s. In a modification instead of the well a supplementary refractory mould w, Fig. 6, is provided and metal is forced into this by applying pressure outside or reduced pressure inside. Means may be provided for indicating or limiting the rise of the metal in the mould w.
