Abstract
549,327. Moulds. BIRMINGHAM ALUMINIUM CASTING (1903), CO., Ltd., and PRITCHARD, P. Oct. 2, 1939, No. 26973. [Class 83 (i)] In casting metal it is run into the mould 1 through an opening 4 containing a baffle 6 which serves to divide the opening into a runner 10 and vent 9. The baffle is shaped to form a narrow opening 8 which controls the rate at which the mould is filled, and to direct the metal to one side so that it flows down the left hand side of the core 3 and up the right. When the mould is full the baffle is removed and the opening 4 filled with molten metal which, being poured last, is hotter than that usual in a riser. In a modification the baffle is formed as a bell 19, Fig. 3, engaging an annular part of the mould and directing the metal poured into cavities 15. The bell has one or more vent openings 23. Vertical adjustment will vary the size of the opening 8 and as the mould is being filled, the bell is raised, keeping its lower edge immersed until finally it is removed and the opening 4 filled with molten metal. The invention may be applied to sand or metal moulds and if desired a number of openings 4 each with a baffle may be used for a single mould.
