Abstract
540,229. Casting-machines ; cores. STANTON IRONWORKS CO., Ltd., and WILSON, P. H. April 8, 1940, No. 6327. [Class 83 (i)] An explosive shell or other hollow body with one open end is made by lowering a refractory core 3 to a predetermined position in a rotating mould 1 containing molten metal 10, the core being positively rotated, at least when in its lowest position, at the same speed as the mould, which speed is so regulated that the metal remains in contact with the core. The core may be rotatably mounted and be adapted to engage the mould in its lowest or other desired position, e.g. by a bevel 8. The core serves to vent the metal and preferably applies a slight pressure to it during the final stage of the core's depression and during solidification.
