Abstract

1390842 Making S G cast iron GEORG FISCHER AG 20 March 1972 [31 March 1971] 13010/72 Heading C7D Apparatus for the manufacture of S G cast iron comprises a container 1 having a compartment 2 containing Mg or Mg alloy 5 with a protective layer 6 of, e.g. CaC 2 . A body 4 of Fe or Fe alloy is positioned as shown, and covered by a plug 3 having a refractory coating. The molten iron is introduced into the container, and when desired the plug is raised by linkage 9, whereupon the body 4 melts and the iron can react with the Mg 5 through the gap left by the molten body. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown) the body projects above the layer 6 and into a recess (27) in the plug. In a further modification, Fig. 3 (not shown) the body can be held mechanically and/or magnetically in the end of the plug for positioning purposes.
