Abstract

Iron sulphides are prepared by putting a layer of scrap iron above a block of sulphur in the base of a (refractory) casting ladle, and then casting steel or pig-iron onto these. Block of sulphur is pref. made by solidifying in the covered ladle, casting is pref. under an exhaust. Height of the ladle is pref. 1.6 times (at least) the height of the sulphur, its internal diameter is less than the height of the sulphur. Resulting iron sulphide has carbon content at most 0.5% and is used for alloying with steel.
