Abstract
The molten iron is uniformly treated with a combination of (a) inoculant, plus (b) lanthanide metals and/or their cpds. The inoculant (a) may contain materials (b); or the molten iron may be treated separately with materials (a, b). Materials (b) are pref. based on cerium. Materials (a, b) are pref. added to iron running along a tapping launder; and the iron flowing along the gutter may be exposed to a stream of oxygen before, during, and/or after adding materials (a, b). The inoculant (a) may also be enriched with oxygen before it is added to the iron. The invention promotes the formation of type A graphite, which reduces or eliminates the presence of cementite in the cast iron.
