Abstract

Alloys based on Fe-Si of parent patent, used for the inoculation of cast iron, contain 0.2-1% carbon. The new Fe-Si alloy is used for the inoculation of grey cast iron or nodular cast iron, and contains 55-85% Si, 2-7% Ca, 1-2.5% C, 0-2% Al, remainder iron and impurities. The calcium content of the alloy is pref. 2-5% and the carbon content 1-1.5%. When used with grey iron the inoculant reduces the depth of the quenched skin and improves tensile strength while reducing the hardness. With nodular cast iron, both tensile strength and elongation are improved and cementite eliminated, the latter improving machineability.
