Abstract

The steel consists, by weight, of 0.75 to 0.9% of carbon, not more than 1% of silicon, 12.5 to 15% of manganese and 1.0 to 1.8% of molybdenum, the balance consisting of iron and unavoidable impurities. The steel, unlike conventional austenitic manganese steel for railway frogs, is not susceptible to carbide precipitation on heating. Frogs can therefore be made from the steel by casting and the frogs can be welded, both without the need for hyperquenching.
