Abstract
725,047. Electromagnets. WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. May 27, 1953, No. 14745/53. Class 35. [Also in Group XXIV] An annular coil 41 for actuating a friction clutch (see Group XXIV) is disposed in an air gap between concentric cylindrical poles 31, 34 of a stationary magnet energized by a coil 36. The coil 41 is mounted on a non-magnetic plate 40 and tube 39 axially movable with the coil when it is energized. The core is substantially saturated to ensure that the force is practically constant during the actuating movement and is linearly related to the current in the coil 41. Further, the inductance of the coil 41, and hence its time constant, will be reduced.
