Abstract
710,662. Friction clutch. SOC. ANON. A. CITROEN. Nov. 28, 1951 [Dec. 4, 1950; June 14, 1951], No. 27892/51. Class 80 (2) [Also in Group XXXV] A device acting both as an electromagnetic clutch and as a homopolar alternator comprises a U-shaped driving flywheel magnet,frame G on an axially slidable member R, with metal clutch discs A co-operating with similar clutch discs B on a driven member P, a stationary coil H, serving to engage the clutch, being supported on a cylinder S which also supports soft-iron stampings T and coil windings I, constituting the armature windings of the alternator, the magnetic flux of which is supplied by the coil H and the magnetic circuit of the clutch. As shown, the cylinder S also carries soft iron rings V, W with magnets X therebetween. The rim of the U of the magnet frame G situated between the coils I and the ring W is subdivided by indentations into finger portions, so that, on its rotation, a current is induced in' the alternator coils I, which is rectified, by' means not described, and fed to the coils H to engage the clutch, the magnetic flux of the coil H reinforcing the flux of the magnetic frame G and passing through the alternator coils I. The current so produced may also be used to charge a battery. In a modification, Figs. 1, 2 (not shown), the magnets X and soft iron rings V, W are dispensed with, the coil H being fed from a separate battery, at least on starting.
