Abstract

724,931. Automatic gramophones. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Feb. 6, 1953 [Feb. 11, 1952], No. 3413/53. Class 40 (2). In an automatic gramophone, a member is located directly in the path of the pick-up to restrict the inward movement of the latter' to a position where it is required to be lowered at the start of a record or stopped outside the edge of the record. In its simplest form, the invention may comprise a member 15, Fig. 2, projecting downwardly from a steadying arm 13 which normally rests on the uppermost record of a stack carried by a retractable step 6 on the centre-post 3. After the last record has been released on to the turntable 2, the arm 13 itself rests on the step 6 until the said last record has been played and at the next automatic operation the arm 13 is released by the step 6 so that the arm 13 drops to a position in which the member 15 intercepts the pick-up arm 5 which is subsequently lowered on to a rest 11 to operate a switch to stop the machine. In a second embodiment, Fig. 4, a pick-up rest 25 has an upright portion carrying two hook ended arms 26, 27, one or other of which may be manually swung over into a horizontal operative position for the purpose of restricting the inward movement of the pick-up arm 20 according to whether a smaller or larger sized record is to be played. In two other embodiments, two intercepting arms are employed which are made individually effective to intercept the pick-up arm, in accordance with the diameter of the record falling to the turntable. In the particular embodiment shown in Fig. 5, two arms 43, 44 are pivoted on a pin 47 and are brought into position over the pick-up arm 37 and rest on a ledge 51. The arms 43. 44 are in frictional engagement with each other, but are free to move about the pin 47. The arm 43 consists of two parts 43a, 43b pivoted together at 43c, and are maintained in alignment with each other by a spring rod 52, and such that in their normal position, as shown in Fig. 5, the hook end 45 is lower than the hook end 46 of the arm 44. When a record 39 of smaller size falls to the turntable 35, the pick-up arm 37 is therefore intercepted only by the hook end 46 of arm 43. When a record 40 of larger size falls to the turntable 35, the part 43a of the arm 43 is temporarily swung downwardly during which movement the arm 44 is moved downwardly on to the ledge 51 by a wire arm 56 mounted on the end of arm 43a. After the record has fallen the arm 43a returns to its normal position, leaving the end 46 of the arm 44 in a position to intercept the pick-up arm 37. During the return movement of the pick-up arm, the arm 44 is reset to the position shown in Fig. 5 by the contact of the pick-up arm with the sloping edge of the hook end 46 of the arm 44.
