757,303. Automatic gramophones. HANSEN, H. C. Sept. 10, 1951 [May 12, 1951], No. 21331/51. Class 40(2) In an automatic gramophone for playing records of mixed sizes, a record-size feeler moves in a path in engagement with the surface of the next record to be supplied to the playing position, and is adapted to be subjected to resistance against its movement in such portion of its travel path that lies in the orbit of the edge of the particular size record with which the feeler is in contact. The automatic gramophone described is substantially the same as that described in Specification 757,379 but differs in the respect that the pick-up arm 112 is provided with a low-friction roller 400 having a surface rising above that of a high-friction member 403. During an outward movement of the arm 112 under the control of a cam-disc 144, the arm 112 moves outwardly without resistance until the roller 400 leaves the edge of the lowermost record of the stack. Should the said lowermost record be of one of the two smaller sizes, the movement of the arm 112 is arrested, so that the cam-follower 252 pushes aside spring 284 1 or 284 2 at the entrance of the cam track appropriate to the size of record detected. At this stage the arm 112 is moved outwardly a small amount, so that the high-friction member 403 passes beyond the edge of the record, whereupon an inward movement which follows unseats the record from the centre post.
