Abstract

775,956. Gramophones. KNECHT, E. Sept. 2, 1955, No. 25326/55. Class 40 (2). A device for automatically placing the stylus down in the entry track of a gramophone record, comprises a guide member which holds the stylus away from the record during an outward sweep of the tone arm across the record until the edge of the record is reached, a locking member which holds said guide member in its operative position, a trailing member which releases the guide member to an inoperative position when the record edge is reached to thereby lower the stylus to the record, and a member for subsequently resetting the guide member to the operative position. In the first embodiment, Figs. 1 and 2, the guide member comprises an arm 3 which is locked in its operative and inoperative positions by a spring 5 which presses on a squared boss 4. The arm 3 is provided with a slipper foot 2, which with advantage could be a wheel, and which serves to hold the stylus away from the record 6 while the tonearm is caused to slide outwardly across the record. When the foot 2 slips down over the edge of the record, a friction member 7 on the arm 3 comes into contact with the record edge and causes the arm 3 to be flung up into the inoperative position, shown dotted in Fig. 1, whereby the stylus is lowered on to the record. An arm 10 is provided on the arm 3 to cooperate with the turntable spindle on the tonearm rest for the purpose of restoring the arm 3 to the operative position. In the second embodiment, Figs. 4 and 5, the guide member comprises a wheel-carrying lever 13 pivoted at 14 and held in the operative position against the action of a spring 15 by the slot 21 in an arm 20 pivoted at 18 and engaging a pin 22 on the lever 13. As the wheel 12 slips over the edge of the record, a projection 23 on the arm 20 comes into contact with the edge of the record and lifts the slot 21 clear of pin 22 so that the lever 13 is retracted by spring 15. The lever 13 is restored to the operative position by a right-handed movement, as viewed in Fig. 5, to the end of a resetting member 16.
