Abstract

316,852. Waterworth, E. N. May 25, 1928. Divided on 317,895. Magazine gramophones. - Relates to magazine gramophones of the kind described in Specification 281,003, in which the records are supported in a pile by means including a stepped post passing centrally through them, from which they are dislodged one at a time so as to fall on to the turntable. According to the invention, in order that records of different size may be arranged in the pile in any order, the release of the records from the post is effected by an edgewise thrust transmitted by a specially constructed pivoted member, which is automatically set by engagement with the lowest record of the pile, so that according to the size of the record, its edge is engaged by one part or another of the mechanism. In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the records 1 are supported on a stepped post 2 mounted on a bracket 3 which can be swung upwards to facilitate threading of the records on the post. A steadying spring 6 bears on the records, the forward edge of the central hole in the lowest one resting on the step 5. A finger 8 is pivoted on a bellcrank lever 9, which is mounted on the same pivot as a plate 11, to which the lever is connected by a strong spring 10. One end of the finger 8 has a cam slot 16 through which a fixed stud 17 passes, and the other end carries a pawl 18. The rear end of the pawl is formed as a hook 20, and the forward end normally lies above the edge of the finger 8, as shown in Fig. 1. A rod 12 connected to the plate 11 is moved by a cam 14 at the end of the playing of a record, the spindle of the cam being rotated by mechanism such as is described in Specification 317,895. As the rod 12 is moved, it rocks the plate 11, and the finger 8 is thus caused to move upwardly and forwardly to the dotted-line position shown in Fig. 2. If the lowest record is a small one, the end 19 of the pawl 18 engages its edge, and pushes the record off the step 5. If the record is large, its under surface depresses the nose 19 as the finger 8 rises and the hook 20 projects upwards so as to engage the edge of the record. After the lowest record has been thus released, the continued rotation of the cam 14 allows a spring 21 to return the parts 12, 11, 8 to the position shown in Fig. 1. The released record is received by the flanged head of a spindle 24, which falls and carries the record down to the turntable. Fig. 5 shows a modification in which a lever 28, pivoted at 29 so that it can rock in a vertical plane, carries on a spindle 26 an arm 25. This bears a finger 38 pivoted thereon and normally pressed by a spring so as to project through a slot in the arm 25. The part 38 has a cam surface, and a cam 39 is also formed on the arm 25. When the record-changing mechanism operates, the lever 28 is swung upwardly, and the arm 25 is then rotated around the axis 26, the edge of the lowest record being engaged either by the cam surface on the part 38 or by the cam 39, according to whether the record is small or large. In the latter case, the finger 38 is depressed by engagement with the under side of the record.
