Abstract
723,623. Stuffing-boxes. JOHNSON & PHILLIPS, Ltd., and STEVENS, C. J. H. June 24, 1952 [July 9, 1951], No. 16229/51. Class 122 (5). [Also in Group XXXVI] A sheathed electric cable 1 is sealed and held in position by a gland comprising a tubular portion 2 surrounding the cable and recessed to form a space into which packing material 3 is pressed, and a split bush 7 urged into gripping contact with the cable. The bush 7 is coned at each end on its outer surface and is located between coned internal surfaces on a ring 8 in the bottom of a recess in a tubular portion 4 and on a gland nut 6 screwed into that recess. Inward movement of the gland nut 6 thus causes the split bush 7 to grip the cable. The packing 3 is compressed by screwing the portion 4 into the portion 2. The washer 8 may be omitted and the bottom of the recess in the portion 4 coned.
