Abstract

723,447. Bearings; supporting and mounting. JOHNSON & HARTLEY, Ltd. March 16, 1953 [March 28, 1952]. No. 7958/52. Class 12 (1). In a spinning spindle bolster which is formed at its ends with housings to receive an upper ball or roller bearing 2 and a lower footstep bearing 4 respectively, and whose intermediate bore 1a provides an oil reservoir, the footstep bearing 4 has radial clearance in its housing and is normally centralized therein by means of two or more rubber or other resilient rings 8 which are compressed into spaced circumferential grooves 7 in the exterior of the bearing 4. One or more longitudinal ducts 6 deeper than the grooves 7 afford restricted communication between the oil reservoir 1a and the annular clearance compartment defined by the rings 8. When the footstep bearing is vibrated by the spindle, the vibration is damped by circumferential displacement of oil within the annular space and also by movement of oil to and from the reservoir la. Oil passes through a hole 5 from the groove 6 to the end of the spindle. The roller bearing 2 is retained in position by means of a washer 9 and circlip 10. Specification 716,955 is referred to.
