723,176. Softening machines for jute &c. FRASER & SONS, Ltd., D. Oct. 5, 1953 [Oct. 10, 1952], No. 25409/52. Class 120 (1). In a fibre softening machine for jute, &c., of the type in which certain of a plurality of fluted rollers are driven by gearing from two side shafts 1, one on each side of the feed table 2, the two shafts 1 are positively connected to be driven by a motor 3 accommodated wholly within the confines of the machine. The motor may be disposed, as shown, so that the rotor axis extends parallel with the line of feed, and drives shafts 1 through spur gears 4 and chain gears 5, or through two trains of spur gears ; or the rotor axis may be at right angles to the line of feed, the gearing to shafts 1 including bevel gears.
