721,040. Joint-making packing. WALKER & CO., Ltd., J. July 24; 1953, No. 20594/53. Class 122 (3). In an annular gasket a of the kind formed by a length of V-section metal strip b spirally wound, with or without an inlay of asbestos paper c between some of the metal turns, so as to define a longitudinal groove in the inner peripheral face and an opposing rib on the outer peripheral face, the two ends of the metal strip being welded in place to prevent the-turns from unwinding, a metal ring d is provided to fit in the groove and project inwardly to reduce the internal dimension of the gasket. The metal ring d, which serves to prevent the metal strip unwinding should the weld of the first turn be broken and also centralizes the gasket when the latter fits over the spigot i (Fig. 7) of a joint, may conform closely to the internal periphery of the gasket or be bent to form, at intervals, inwardly projecting resilient locating protuberances f. The ends of the metal ring may be joined or left open and the gasket may be formed of metal strip of section such that more than one groove is formed in its internal periphery and a metal ring may be fitted into one or more of these grooves.
