The parts 10, 11 of a telescopic pit prop are clamped together by a clamp 15 fixed to the lower part 10 and clamped around the upper part 11 by a wedge claw 21 when it is driven down parallel with the prop; the wedge claw is released by a transverse wedge 26 engaging an inclined surface or one of two inclined surfaces 24, 24a on the bottom of the wedge. The wedge claw 21 embraces the outwardly bent ends 16 of the clamp 15 by surfaces which are inclined vertically as shown in Fig. 5a. The downward movement of the wedge claw and thus the clamping effect is limited by a screw 28. Also to limit the movement of the wedge it has a slot 33 engaged by a projection 32 on a bar 31 fixed on the bolt 19 which also clamps the clamp 15 to the lower prop part. The bar 31 has a projection 40 which prevents the collar 15 moving up. The clamp 15 decreases in cross-section towards its ends 16. The final adjustment of the prop against the roof is performed by means of a head 14 mounted in the prop by a screw thread 12.
