In the drying of friable materials the material passes through a rotating drum c which is rotated at a speed to urge the material centrifugally toward the inner wall periphery and drying gas is directed into the drum as a cyclone coaxial with the drum. Material and gas may move in the same direction or in counter current. The material is fed. by a conveyer b through funnel a and the drum has axially arranged blades d carrying oblique ribs. The drying gas enters at f and a rapid cyclone motion is given to it by a steering device g the rotary velocity being above 20 metres per second.
