Abstract

909,889. Drying apparatus. HOLLANDMERTEN, E. L. Nov. 18, 1959 [Jan. 8, 1959], No. 39045/59. Class 34 (2). Granular or powdery material is dried whilst passing through an evacuated rotating drum 1 which is charged and discharged at the same end. The drum comprises inner and outer cylinders 2, 3 having heating jackets and spiral conveyer blades 4, 5 of opposite hand arranged on the respective inner surfaces thereof. Material is continuously fed to the inner cylinder from a valve controlled feed pipe 20 by an auger 21 rotatably mounted in a tube 24 and is removed from the outer cylinder for collection in a hopper 30, forming the lower part of a fixed housing 10, by adjustable blades 27, passages 26 and a spiral conveyer 9 in a trunnion 7. The housing 10 is subjected to a vacuum through a pipe 11, has an observation window 31 and is hermetically sealed to the rotatable trunnion 7 through a stuffing-box 13. In a modified apparatus the material is fed to the outer cylinder 40, Fig. 2, via a pipe 48, distributer vanes 50 and a spiral conveyer 51 and is discharged from the housing hopper 58 on collection from the inner cylinder 41 by blades 53 and a spiral conveyer 56 within a tube 57. The drum may comprise more than two concentric cylinders.
