941,071. Charging shaft furnaces and drying shafts. RHEINISCHE KALKSTEINWERKE G.m.b.H. Sept. 6, 1960 [Sept. 7, 1959], No. 30747/60. Headings F4B and F4G. Rotary apparatus for charging a silo, a drying shaft or, as illustrated, a shaft furnace comprises a shoot 31 disposed in a rotary inverted funnel 17 feeding in turn openings a-f of shoots 39 arranged on a rotary platform 13, openings a-f being arranged on a circle swept by the discharge end 37 of shoot 31, and the discharge ends of shoots 39 being disposed contiguously on a radius of the furnace so that as platform 13 rotates, the combined discharge ends sweep over the whole surface of the burden. Stepped rotation of shoot 31 over openings a-f in turn ensures that charge material is distributed through the shoots 39 in turn. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the whole of each shoot 39 is in one radial plane. In a further modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), each shoot 39 is doubled so that two different materials can be charged separately into the furnace, entry for the separate materials being provided by concertina openings in the shoot 31. Provision may be made for more than two charge components.
